More commercial space has been designated in Savusavu, Vanua Levu, to enhance economic growth. Filimoni Vosarogo, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, inaugurated a 1.14-hectare commercial lot at Qaraniqatio in Savusavu last Friday.
The newly allocated space is expected to not only meet the demand for commercial areas but also create job opportunities, invigorate local businesses, and strengthen the economic framework of Savusavu. This 1.14 hectares of state land will accommodate nine or ten commercial blocks along with sufficient parking spaces, with the potential to generate approximately 15 jobs per commercial unit.
Vosarogo mentioned that the development could provide employment for about 150 individuals within Savusavu Town, reducing the need for locals to seek work abroad in places like Australia, New Zealand, or even in Suva.
He emphasized the significance of collaboration between the public sector and private enterprises in establishing a sustainable growth platform in local communities. He pointed out that there has been minimal progress among various stakeholders over the past decade.
The minister stressed the importance of fostering local businesses and engaging local investors to capitalize on available opportunities. He noted that development often requires foundational infrastructure to be in place first.
Vosarogo expressed gratitude to Land Planning, Surveying and Engineering Consultants Pte Limited Fiji for its pivotal role in this project. He affirmed the government’s commitment to promoting development in the northern region.
Sanya Dayal, the director of Land Planning, Surveying and Engineering Consultants Pte Limited Fiji, remarked that the partnership involved comprehensive feasibility studies aimed at achieving sustainable development goals and establishing a vibrant commercial hub. He also mentioned that the second phase of the project would focus on improvements to the Energy Fiji Limited grid, water supply, and road infrastructure for the commercial lots.
