Concerns continue to escalate regarding the state of healthcare services in northern Fiji, as the X-ray machine at Savusavu Hospital remains out of service for nearly a year. This situation compounds existing worries highlighted just days ago regarding the non-operational CT scanner at Labasa Hospital, which has not functioned for over two years.
According to Permanent Secretary for Health Jemesa Tudravu, patients requiring X-rays are currently directed to Labasa Hospital or private providers, with costs covered by the ministry. “We have purchased a replacement X-ray machine,” Tudravu confirmed, hopeful about the anticipated arrival of new equipment in the next two months.
Local community leader Avikash Pillay expressed that the absence of a functional X-ray machine has disproportionately impacted the region’s poorer populations. Since November, residents have faced challenges as they must travel significant distances for necessary imaging services, with taxi fares to Labasa reaching around $100 one way. Pillay had raised the issue with health officials in March, expecting a resolution by June, but patience is wearing thin.
The situation echoes sentiments shared by local businesses and residents about the urgent need for operational healthcare facilities. A local businessman, Aren Nunnink, previously assessed the X-ray machine and found that it only requires a software upgrade to become operational. Despite his offer to cover repair costs and assistance from local engineers, communication with health authorities has been hindered, as some officials reportedly remain on leave.
The recent budget allocation by Finance Minister Biman Prasad of $12 million for health facility upgrades, including refurbishments for the Savusavu health center, raises questions about the effectiveness of funding in addressing immediate healthcare needs. Without swift action from the Ministry of Health, the ongoing troubles may exacerbate the health crisis in this key region.
Community members have repeatedly expressed their frustration over the failed equipment, highlighting critical gaps in healthcare accessibility. However, as locals and business leaders unite with a shared purpose of seeking improvements, there remains a hopeful expectation that prompt action from health authorities will soon restore vital medical services. With a concerted effort from all stakeholders, there is potential for significant enhancements in the healthcare infrastructure serving the Savusavu area.
