Businesses in Savusavu are currently facing significant challenges due to ongoing water supply disruptions that have been affecting the town and its surrounding areas. This situation has led to increasing losses for operators, as the disruptions hinder productivity and service delivery, ultimately impacting the local economy.

For more than two weeks, residents and businesses have experienced low water pressure and outages. The Savusavu Chamber of Commerce has highlighted that businesses reliant on water—such as restaurants, cafés, food outlets, and car washes—are among those hit the hardest. Water is crucial for hygiene and food safety, making it essential for daily operations in these sectors.

Chamber President Avikash Pillay has voiced the frustrations of the business community, emphasizing that repeated complaints from both residents and businesses have not been adequately addressed. This has raised concerns not only about public health but also about maintaining customer confidence in Savusavu as an emerging business and tourism hub. The Chamber is urging local authorities to prioritize resolving the water supply issue and to provide clear communication regarding a long-term solution. It warns that continuing disruptions could threaten livelihoods and overall economic stability.

On a positive note, the Water Authority of Fiji has reported that efforts to restore the water supply are making progress. The Savusavu Water Treatment Plant has reached approximately 80 percent capacity following maintenance, including the clearing of intake screens and stabilization of raw water flows. Moreover, reservoir levels are recovering, with the Tavutikau Reservoir now fully replenished and water supply restored to lower-lying regions, including Savusavu Town. Improvements to the water supply in elevated areas are anticipated as conditions permit.

This situation highlights the importance of efficient infrastructure and proactive communication in addressing community needs, with hope for a quick resolution that will allow businesses in Savusavu to resume normal operations and recover from these challenges.
