The new Savusavu market, a two-story building valued at $1 million, is set to officially open on May 9, 2025. The Ministry of Local Government initially expected completion earlier, but needed additional time for essential checks and delays caused by adverse weather conditions. The construction project has been in the works since October 2022, spearheaded by the previous government and funded by both the Fijian Government and the UN Women Markets for Change project.
During a recent inspection of the new market, Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, expressed optimism about the facility’s potential to support local entrepreneurship, as it is expected to accommodate around 180 vendors. He emphasized the importance of such municipal markets in encouraging local businesses, fostering entrepreneurship among farmers and middlemen, and enhancing the circulation of money within the community.
This development complements ongoing efforts to improve local markets in Fiji, reflecting the government’s commitment to upgrading infrastructure and creating vibrant community hubs. Similar projects, such as the recently inaugurated municipal market in Levuka, also emphasize the dual benefits of supporting local economies while building community identity and resilience.
The new Savusavu market represents a significant opportunity for local vendors and residents alike, promising to revitalize the area’s economic activity and foster a sense of communal pride. The collaboration between various stakeholders in bringing this project to fruition reveals a shared vision of empowerment and growth for the Savusavu community and beyond.
