Avikash Pillay, president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, is urging the Ministry of Health to address the longstanding issues surrounding the broken X-ray machine at the Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. According to Pillay, the machine has been non-functional for over two months, following a period of reduced capability since last July.

Pillay expressed the frustrations of the local business community, highlighting their willingness to help resolve the issue, but emphasizing that they require direction from the ministry’s central office. Patients are feeling the impact of the machine’s failure, with individuals like Ilisapeci Bola being referred to private facilities for necessary X-rays, causing additional inconvenience, particularly for those traveling from remote areas.

Local businessman Aren Nunnink examined the machine and determined that it only requires a software upgrade to operate effectively. He has volunteered to cover the repair costs and mentioned that a local engineer could fix the problem in about 30 minutes. Nunnink expressed his concerns about the potential risks of the machine’s inoperability, especially in emergency situations, noting that the community relies on this facility for critical health services.

Despite outreach efforts, including an email sent to the Permanent Secretary for Health, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, no response has been received regarding the situation.

In the recently announced 2024-2025 National Budget, Finance Minister Biman Prasad allocated $12 million for capital improvement projects at various health facilities, including the Savusavu hospital. This funding is designed to enhance services across the health system, including the renovation of urban hospitals and health centers. However, the issues regarding the X-ray machine remain unresolved at this time.

This situation underscores the critical need for timely communication and collaboration between health administrators and local community stakeholders. The engagement of local business leaders in health service improvements could lead to more efficient solutions for the community, ensuring that the necessary medical equipment is available and functional to meet patient needs.

In summary, the call for action from community leaders highlights the importance of maintaining health infrastructure and fast-tracking repairs when needed. The support offered by local businesses reflects a proactive approach to community health challenges that, if heeded, could significantly enhance healthcare delivery in Savusavu.
