Fiji Seismology has reported an unusual number of seismic events, recording a total of 47 earthquakes in the Savusavu Bay area since 1:00 PM today. The tremors, which varied in magnitude from 1.0 to 4.0, primarily occurred on the western side of the bay, specifically offshore from Natuvu Village.

Although these earthquakes are classified as minor to light, their shallow depth and proximity to inhabited areas have made them noticeable to local residents. Fiji Seismology has reassured the public that this cluster of earthquakes does not indicate an impending large earthquake. They explained that swarms of earthquakes are often comprised of several similar magnitudes occurring in close succession, as evidenced in this recent sequence.

The organization emphasized the importance of being aware and prepared for seismic activity due to Fiji’s location in a region with relatively high earthquake potential.

Overall, while the frequency of these earthquakes might be concerning, officials urge residents not to panic but rather remain informed and prepared. This situation could serve as a reminder for communities in seismically active areas to establish and review their emergency plans, fostering resilience against natural disasters.

In summary, while the occurrence of multiple earthquakes in Savusavu Bay may have raised alarms, experts have communicated that these events are typical and not a precursor to a larger quake, encouraging preparedness instead of fear.
