The Sausauvou Taveuni under-21 rugby team is gearing up for their debut at the prestigious Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament, which commenced today at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. With high aspirations, Captain Tevita Sukabula expressed the team’s determination not only to participate but to win the title, despite being the new entrants in the competition.
Building on their recent success where they clinched the Plate in the under-21 category at the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s earlier this year, the team has set winning the Marist 7s as a primary goal. Sukabula emphasized the team’s excitement, noting, “We want to win the title, and we believe that we are able to achieve this,” highlighting the significance of the tournament as Fiji’s largest and most thrilling rugby event.
The Sausauvou Taveuni side has been diligently preparing over the past few weeks, focusing on rectifying weaknesses identified in their earlier tournaments within the Fiji Bitter 7s series. Their opening match against Bureta Young Boys is scheduled for 9:20 am, followed by games against Bua Babas at 1:04 pm and Savali Logistics at 4:58 pm.
This year’s Fiji Bitter Marist 7s features participation from 64 teams, a significant increase reflecting the tournament’s status as a celebrated event that unites rugby teams across Fiji and neighboring regions. The tournament also showcases emerging talents, providing valuable experience for young athletes to display their skills on a grand platform.
The blending of rivalry and sportsmanship throughout the tournament promises a vibrant atmosphere, rekindling the passionate spirit of rugby among Fijians. For Sausauvou Taveuni, their journey is filled with hope, determination, and the drive to make their mark in the realm of rugby.
