The future of former Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru now hinges on the results of an investigation into alleged abuse of office related to the Fiji Sports Council. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that the ongoing inquiry will determine whether Saukuru will be eligible to return to his position.
Rabuka indicated that investigators will assess any potential administrative or criminal responsibility linked to the allegations before moving forward. “At the end of it, they will see whether there is any culpability — administrative or criminal — and that will take it on from there,” he said.
The Prime Minister reassured that if the investigation concludes without any findings of wrongdoing or sufficient evidence to pursue further action, Saukuru may be reinstated. He reiterated that the outcome of this investigation would play a crucial role in deciding the next steps.
Saukuru was dismissed from the Youth and Sports portfolio by the Prime Minister with immediate effect. Rabuka noted that simply finding no grounds for further police action would not automatically lead to Saukuru’s reinstatement.
While the investigation is ongoing, the Prime Minister is currently overseeing the ministry himself, with Assistant Minister Aliki Bia handling the day-to-day operations. The Prime Minister highlighted that this decision reflects a commitment to uphold transparency, accountability, and due process as the inquiry takes its course.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and proper conduct within government roles, and it underscores the commitment of Fiji’s leadership to ensure that all officials are held to high standards.
