English Premiership club Saracens has announced the signing of Vilikesa Nairau, a promising young Fijian prop, from Championship side Coventry. The 22-year-old player has already represented Fiji at the under-20 level, showcasing his potential on the international stage. Although the details of the contract remain undisclosed, this marks Nairau’s first professional rugby contract as he joins Saracens.

Nairau’s rise began in Fiji with the Suva rugby club before he made the transition to England, where he played for Coventry last year. His addition to Saracens is seen as a strategic move to bolster the team’s front row depth as they aim to improve their standing in the Premiership. Currently, Saracens are positioned fifth on the league table, closely trailing the fourth-placed Sale Sharks.

Expressing his excitement about the move, Nairau shared gratitude towards his coaches and the management team for trusting him with this opportunity. “I would like to thank the almighty God for the blessings that he has given me,” he said, emphasizing his readiness to contribute to the team.

This signing adds to the growing trend of Fijian players making significant impacts in professional rugby leagues worldwide. Similar to the recent signing of Waisea Nayacalevu, who joined Ospreys from Sale Sharks, Nairau’s move underlines the resilience and skill that Fijian players bring to their teams. As these athletes transition and succeed in different leagues, fans can remain hopeful for the continued growth of Fijian representation in international rugby.
