World Toilet Day is observed each year on November 19 to highlight the global sanitation crisis and promote clean and safe toilet facilities for everyone. This year’s event, themed “Toilets are a Place for Peace,” was celebrated at the Vunibua Settlement, where 17 out of 47 families benefited from the installation of sewage systems.

The Water Authority of Fiji has reported that its 11 wastewater treatment plants struggle to handle the volume of wastewater they receive. In response, the New Zealand government, in partnership with the Fijian government, has funded the installation of sewage pumps for these families, addressing a crucial need in the community.

The initiative particularly targeted families that have significantly contributed to local waste. The sewage system features two pedal flush options: a smaller one that uses less water for urination and a larger one designed for bowel movements, which requires more water.

RISE Fiji has announced plans to extend access to the sewage system to the remaining families in Vunibua, with the hope of achieving full connectivity by 2025.

In addition, the Water Authority of Fiji is educating the public on appropriate flushing practices, emphasizing that only toilet paper should be flushed. Items like rags, tampons, medications, and other non-biodegradable items clog the sewer systems, leading to significant issues.

Collaborating with the Ministry of Health and the Water Authority of Fiji, RISE Fiji aims to provide proper wastewater access throughout the country by 2030, which would greatly improve public health and sanitation standards.

This initiative marks a positive step toward better sanitation in Fiji and demonstrates a commitment to sustainable community development, emphasizing the importance of proper waste management practices. As efforts continue to expand access to these essential services, the hope remains that many more families will benefit from improved sanitation in the near future.
