INDIA’S High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, recently lauded the Sangam movement for its pivotal role in fostering unity, discipline, and a robust community spirit through various sporting activities. His remarks were made during the Sangam Snooker jersey handover ceremony for the Nadi Snooker team, where he emphasized the significance of youth engagement in sports as a celebration of community values intrinsic to Fiji.
At the event, held on Wednesday evening, Mehta expressed that the gathering underscored values such as “youth, sport, and community,” which he believes are emblematic of both Fiji’s essence and the strength of the Sangam movement. He commended the dedication of the event’s organizers, sponsors, and volunteers, highlighting their commitment to making the occasion a success.
“The Sangam World Cup, featuring six nations in competition across soccer, snooker, and golf, exemplifies the global outreach and unity of the Sangam community,” Mehta noted, pointing out the importance of smaller sports. He remarked on how these lesser-publicized sports, including snooker, play a vital role in cultivating essential life skills among youth such as discipline, patience, and emotional composure.
Mehta described snooker as not only a game of skill but a mental discipline that requires calculation, foresight, and emotional control. He further acknowledged the contributions of TISI Sangam in shaping the cultural identity of Fiji, remarking on its establishment in 1926 by Sadhu Kuppus to preserve and promote the heritage of South Indians in the region.
With an eye on the future, he extended his best wishes to the Nadi Sangam Snooker team, encouraging them as they prepare to participate in the upcoming 2025 Sangam World Cup in Lautoka. He emphasized that the jerseys they received represent pride and community expectations, urging them to wear it with honor as they carry the aspirations of not just Nadi, but all of Fiji.
