Samoa’s Young Captain Ready to Tackle Tough Fijian Challenge

Manu Samoa captain Theo McFarland expressed his pride in leading his team against the Flying Fijians in the opening match of the Pacific Nations Cup at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. In an interview with SUNsports following their captain’s rugby session, the 28-year-old lock, who plays for Saracens in the Gallagher Premiership, acknowledged the significant challenge ahead but emphasized his gratitude for the opportunity.

McFarland mentioned that he is familiar with Flying Fijians prop Eroni Mawi, who is on the reserve bench. He recognized the strength of the Flying Fijians, stating, “The Flying Fijians are a very good side.” He noted that while Samoa is a younger team, they will focus on their defense, especially given Fiji’s formidable reputation. The captain highlighted the need to identify areas where they can exploit weaknesses against their Fijian counterparts.

Samoa head coach Mahoni Schwalger praised McFarland’s leadership abilities, describing him as a young captain who will face a significant test in guiding his team during the match. He commended McFarland for handling the responsibilities of captaincy well, as he continues to provide direction and leadership to his teammates.
