Samoa’s Young Captain Prepares for Fijian Challenge

Manu Samoa captain Theo McFarland expressed his pride and honor in leading his team against the Flying Fijians in the opening match of the Pacific Nations Cup at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. In an interview with SUNsports following a captain’s rugby session, the 28-year-old lock, who plays for Saracens in the Gallagher Premiership, acknowledged the significant challenge this match presents but also emphasized his appreciation for the opportunity.

McFarland will be facing off against Flying Fijians prop Eroni Mawi, who is on the reserves. He recognized the strength of the Flying Fijians, stating, “The Flying Fijians are a very good side.” He noted that Samoa is a relatively young team, but they are focusing on improving their defense, particularly as they prepare to battle Fiji. McFarland mentioned, “We are looking at areas where we can exploit and use against our Fijian brothers.”

Samoa’s head coach, Mahoni Schwalger, described McFarland as a young captain facing a significant test today in his leadership. Schwalger praised McFarland’s performance, saying, “He is doing really well. Theo is handling the captaincy really well, giving pointers and leading his pack.”
