Samoa’s Tough Test: Will the Flying Fijians Soar?

The Manu Samoa rugby team is preparing for an exciting match against the Flying Fijians, as expressed by head coach Mahonri Schwalger during their training session at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Schwalger, a former Samoan captain from the 2011 Rugby World Cup, shared his enthusiasm about the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup opener.

“It’s a new year and a new competition, and we are looking forward to a good game,” Schwalger told SUNsports. He emphasized the physical nature of the encounter they expect against the Flying Fijians and acknowledged the unpredictable playing style of the Fijian team.

This match holds special significance for Samoa, as it coincides with the 100-year celebration of the Samoa Rugby Union, which was founded when rugby was introduced to the nation by the Marist Brothers in 1920. The first international match played by Samoa, then known as Western Samoa, was against Fiji in 1924, with Fiji emerging victorious 6-0.

Schwalger admitted that the team faces a significant challenge but is determined to perform well on Fijian soil. “It’s a big year for us. Our whole nation is supporting us during this campaign,” he said. The team has dedicated the past three weeks to rigorous preparations leading up to the PNC opener, making it a crucial game, especially for new players experiencing Fiji for the first time.

The match is set to kick off at 6 PM.
