Samoa’s Tough Test Awaits Against the Flying Fijians

The Flying Fijians have earned their nickname, and Manu Samoa’s head coach Mahonri Schwalger expressed their commitment to rising to the challenge during their captain’s run at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.

“We are really excited to be here,” Schwalger, a former Samoan captain from the 2011 Rugby World Cup, shared with SUNsports. “This year brings a new competition, and we are eager for a strong performance.”

Having been part of the Chiefs team that won the Super Rugby from 2012 to 2013, Schwalger anticipates a tough battle against the Flying Fijians as his team prepares for their Pacific Nations Cup opener. He noted that the unpredictability of Fiji’s players adds an extra layer of difficulty to the match.

This game is particularly special for Samoa, coinciding with the Samoa Rugby Union’s centenary celebration. Rugby was introduced to Samoa in 1920 by the Marist Brothers, with the Apia Rugby Union being established in 1924. Samoa’s first international match took place on August 18, 1924, against Fiji in Apia, resulting in a 6-0 victory for Fiji.

Schwalger acknowledged the significant challenge ahead, focusing on the importance of performing well on Fijian soil. “It’s a significant year for us, and our nation is supporting us throughout this journey,” he said, emphasizing their solid preparations over the past three weeks leading up to the match.

For many team members, this will be their first experience playing in Fiji, making it an exciting and crucial game. The match is scheduled to kick off at 6 PM.
