Samoa’s Rugby Showdown: A Century of Rivalry Awaits!

The Flying Fijians have a reputation for their dynamic playing style, a sentiment echoed by Manu Samoa’s head coach, Mahonri Schwalger, during their captain’s run at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday. Schwalger, a former captain for Samoa during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, expressed his excitement about the upcoming match, saying, “It is a new year and new competition, and we are looking forward to a good game.”

Having been part of the Super Rugby-winning Chiefs from 2012 to 2013, Schwalger shared his expectations for a physical match against the Flying Fijians as Samoa prepares for their Pacific Nations Cup opener. He noted that the unique unpredictability of the Fijian players adds to the challenge.

This match is particularly significant for the Samoan team as it coincides with the celebration of the Samoa Rugby Union’s 100-year anniversary. Rugby was introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920, and the Apia Rugby Union followed in 1924. The first international match for Western Samoa occurred against Fiji in Apia on August 18, 1924, with Fiji winning 6-0.

Schwalger acknowledged the enormity of the task ahead, emphasizing their commitment to bringing home a victory on Fiji’s turf. “It is a big year for us. We play Fiji every year, and the boys know what is expected. Our whole nation is watching and supporting us throughout the campaign,” he stated.

The coach also mentioned that the team has been in rigorous preparation for the last three weeks leading up to the PNC opener, particularly emphasizing the significance for new players, some of whom are experiencing playing in Fiji for the first time. “It will be an awesome game,” he added.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 6 PM.
