Samoa’s Rugby Challenge: Ready to Face the Flying Fijians?

The Flying Fijians live up to their name, showcasing their aerial prowess in rugby. Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger expressed his enthusiasm during a training session at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.

“This is an exciting time for us,” Schwalger, who captained the Samoan team during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, told SUNsports. “It’s a fresh year with new competition, and we’re looking forward to a strong performance.”

A former member of the Super Rugby championship-winning Chiefs from 2012 to 2013, Schwalger anticipates a physical match against the Flying Fijians in their opening game of the Pacific Nations Cup. He acknowledged the challenge posed by Fiji’s unpredictable playing style.

Schwalger emphasized the significance of this match, as it coincides with the Samoa Rugby Union’s centenary celebration. Rugby was introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920, and the first international game occurred in 1924, where Western Samoa faced Fiji and lost 6-0.

He noted the heightened expectations for this match, citing the support from their nation. “It’s a big year for us. We play Fiji every year, and the boys understand what’s at stake. Our entire nation is backing us through this campaign,” said Schwalger.

The team has undergone rigorous training over the past three weeks in preparation for the Pacific Nations Cup opener. Schwalger commented on the experience for new players, some of whom are visiting Fiji for the first time. “It’s going to be an exciting game,” he added.

The match is set to kick off at 6 PM.
