Samoa’s Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa and her entire Cabinet are preparing to participate in the upcoming general elections under the newly formed political entity, the Samoa Uniting Party (SUP). This political party was officially registered on May 30, marking a significant point in the nation’s political landscape.

Leatinuu Wayne Sooialo, the Caretaker Minister for Public Enterprises, confirmed during a meeting of the party’s founding members that all 15 members, including the Prime Minister, will be the core candidates for the Samoa Uniting Party. The party is chaired by Sitagata Uatoto Elisara, with Lilomaiava Florence Sa’aga serving as secretary and Tapuai Laupua Fiti as treasurer.

Around 30 members were seen at the Electoral Office finalizing the registration of the new political party and its members. The SUP plans to announce its list of candidates shortly, but the formal dissolution of Parliament is scheduled for June 3, 2025. Following this dissolution, candidates can officially align with their chosen parties or declare independent status.

Additionally, the recent political climate has seen the emergence of two other parties, the Samoa Tula’i Party and the Samoa Labour Party, which have also been registered with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labor (MCIL). However, as of now, they have not yet registered with the Office of the Electoral Commissioner (OEC).

The current political landscape is characterized by tensions following the recent rejection of the Prime Minister’s proposed budget, representing the first failure of such a budget in over 40 years. This has triggered the need for early elections within 90 days, marking a critical transition point for the governance of Samoa.

Opposition leader Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has voiced concerns regarding the government’s budgeting and expenditure, advocating for a more economically responsible approach. He maintains that despite recent challenges, there are sufficient funds available to ensure that essential services remain intact.

As Samoa approaches its upcoming elections, there is a sense of hopefulness that these events will foster renewed engagement among political factions and empower voters to participate actively in shaping the direction of their government. The dynamic nature of the political landscape emphasizes the potential for meaningful change, collaborative governance, and strengthened democratic principles as the nation moves forward into an electoral phase filled with possibility.
