Samoa’s High Stakes Showdown Against Flying Fijians

The Flying Fijians live up to their name, as noted by Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger during their captain’s run at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.

“We are really excited to be here,” Schwalger, a veteran from the 2011 Rugby World Cup, expressed to SUNsports. He emphasized the significance of the new season and competition, looking forward to a strong performance in their first match of the Pacific Nations Cup.

Having been part of the Super Rugby-winning Chiefs team from 2012 to 2013, Schwalger anticipates a physical battle against the Flying Fijians. He acknowledged the challenge they pose, especially given the unpredictability of Fiji’s playing style.

This match is particularly special for Schwalger’s team as it aligns with the Samoa Rugby Union’s 100-year anniversary. The introduction of rugby to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920 led to the formation of the Apia Rugby Union in 1924. The first international match for Western Samoa against Fiji took place on August 18, 1924, with Fiji emerging victorious at 6–0.

Schwalger is cognizant of the challenge ahead, ready to tackle it on Fijian soil. “It’s a significant year for us. We play Fiji every year, and the team knows what is at stake. Our entire nation is behind us, supporting our journey,” he stated.

The squad has been diligently preparing for the past three weeks leading to the opener. “It’s a challenge for new players, with some experiencing Fiji for the first time. It promises to be an exciting game,” he said.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 6 PM.
