Samoa’s Exciting Clash Against the Flying Fijians Awaits!

The Flying Fijians are set to take to the field, and Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger is eager for the challenge. Speaking during a practice session at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, Schwalger expressed the excitement surrounding the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup opener.

“We are really excited to be here,” said Schwalger, who captained Samoa in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He acknowledged the significance of the match, particularly as it marks the Samoa Rugby Union’s 100-year anniversary. Rugby was introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920, leading to the formation of the Apia Rugby Union in 1924, with Samoa’s first international match against Fiji occurring later that year.

The coach recognizes the physicality his team must face against Fiji and noted the unpredictability of their style of play. “It is a big year for us. We play Fiji every year, and the boys know what is expected. Our whole nation is watching and supporting us throughout the campaign,” Schwalger remarked.

With three weeks of preparation behind them, Schwalger emphasized that new players may find the experience daunting, especially for those on their first visit to Fiji. However, he anticipates an exciting match, which is scheduled to kick off at 6 PM.
