Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger emphasized the team’s eagerness to face the Flying Fijians in their Pacific Nations Cup opener during their captain’s run at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. “We are really excited to be here,” Schwalger, a former captain of the Samoan team during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, told SUNsports.
He acknowledged the physical challenge that awaits them, highlighting the unpredictable nature of Fijian players as a key aspect of the upcoming match. Schwalger noted that this game holds special significance as it lines up with the Samoa Rugby Union’s 100th anniversary celebration.
Rugby was introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920, leading to the establishment of the Apia Rugby Union in 1924. The first international match for Western Samoa took place on August 18, 1924, against Fiji in Apia, where Fiji emerged victorious with a score of 6–0.
Schwalger reflected on the responsibility they bear, knowing their nation is keenly following their performance. He mentioned that the team has been in intensive preparation for the past three weeks leading up to the match. “It will be an awesome game,” Schwalger stated, recognizing the excitement of new players experiencing Fiji for the first time.
The match is set to kick off at 6 PM.
