The Flying Fijians are known for their dynamic style of play, and Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for their Pacific Nations Cup opener at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Speaking during the team’s training session, Schwalger, a former captain of the Samoan national team and a Super Rugby champion, conveyed excitement about the match.
“We are really excited to be here,” Schwalger told SUNsports. “It is a new year and new competition, and we are looking forward to a good game.” He acknowledged the challenge posed by the unpredictability of the Fijian players and anticipated a physically demanding game.
This match holds special significance as it coincides with the Samoa Rugby Union’s 100-year celebration, marking a century since rugby was introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920. The first international match for Western Samoa occurred on August 18, 1924, against Fiji in Apia, which Fiji won 6–0.
Schwalger emphasized the importance of this year’s competition, highlighting that the team has prepared diligently over the past three weeks. “It is a big year for us. Our whole nation is watching and supporting us throughout the campaign,” he remarked, mentioning that the new players are especially eager to make their mark in Fiji.
The match is set to kick off at 6 PM.
