Samoa’s Challenge: Will They Soar Against Fiji?

Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger expressed enthusiasm ahead of their Pacific Nations Cup opener against the Flying Fijians, emphasizing the excitement of being in Suva for the match. Schwalger, a former Samoan captain during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, acknowledged the physical challenge posed by the Fijian team, known for their unpredictability on the field.

The match holds special significance as it aligns with the Samoa Rugby Union’s centenary celebrations. Rugby was introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920, and the Apia Rugby Union was established in 1924. The first international match for Western Samoa took place on August 18, 1924, against Fiji, which Fiji won 6–0.

Schwalger highlighted the importance of this match, stating that his players understand the expectations from their nation as they prepare for the bout on Fiji’s home soil. With three weeks of rigorous training leading up to this encounter, he acknowledged the challenge for new players, some of whom will experience Fiji for the first time.

The eagerly awaited match is set to commence at 6 PM.
