Samoa’s Big Challenge: Will the Flying Fijians Soar Again?

The Flying Fijians’ name is fitting, as head coach of Manu Samoa, Mahonri Schwalger, expressed during a captain’s run at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Schwalger, a veteran of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, conveyed his enthusiasm for the upcoming match, noting, “It is a new year and new competition, and we are looking forward to a good game.”

Having been part of the victorious Chiefs team in Super Rugby from 2012 to 2013, Schwalger anticipates a challenging match against the Flying Fijians, particularly due to their physical style of play and unpredictable nature. He believes this match is particularly significant as it aligns with the Samoa Rugby Union’s centenary celebrations.

Rugby was introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920, leading to the formation of the Apia Rugby Union in 1924. The first international match, in which Western Samoa faced Fiji, took place on August 18, 1924, resulting in a 6-0 victory for Fiji.

Schwalger emphasized the magnitude of the upcoming match, saying, “It is a big year for us. We play Fiji every year and the boys know what is expected. Our whole nation is watching and supporting us throughout the campaign.” He mentioned that their preparation over the past three weeks has been strong, particularly for newer players unfamiliar with playing in Fiji.

The match is set to kick off at 6 p.m.
