Samoa’s Big Challenge: Can They Ground the Flying Fijians?

The Manu Samoa rugby team is gearing up for their Pacific Nations Cup opener against the Flying Fijians, with head coach Mahonri Schwalger expressing a strong sense of excitement as they prepare for the match at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Schwalger, who captained Samoa during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, emphasized the significance of the match, noting that it coincides with the 100-year celebration of the Samoa Rugby Union. He reflected on the rich history of rugby in Samoa, which was introduced by the Marist Brothers in 1920, and highlighted their first international match against Fiji in 1924, which Fiji won 6-0.

The former Super Rugby champion acknowledged the tough challenge posed by the Flying Fijians, particularly their unpredictable playing style. He is aware of the task ahead and is confident his team can succeed on Fijian soil. With the support of their nation, Schwalger noted that the players understand the expectations placed upon them.

The training leading up to the match has been rigorous, with Schwalger pointing out that some players will be experiencing the intensity of a match in Fiji for the first time, adding to the occasion’s uniqueness. The highly anticipated match is set to kick off at 6 PM.
