Manu Samoa captain Theo McFarland has expressed his pride in leading his team against the Flying Fijians in the opening match of the Pacific Nations Cup at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. In an interview with SUNsports following a rugby captain’s session, the 28-year-old lock, who plays for Saracens in the Gallagher Premiership, acknowledged the significant challenge that lies ahead. However, he is grateful for the opportunity to captain his side.
McFarland will compete against Fijian prop Eroni Mawi, who is on the reserves. “The Flying Fijians are a very good side,” McFarland remarked. He noted that while Samoa is a relatively young team, they are focusing on their defense as they face Fiji. They plan to identify weaknesses in the Fijian game that they can capitalize on.
Samoa’s head coach, Mahoni Schwalger, described McFarland as a young captain facing a critical test in how he guides his team into this match. “He is doing really well. Theo is handling the captaincy effectively, providing direction and leading his forwards,” Schwalger stated.
