Samoa vs Fiji: A Clash of Titans in Rugby’s Historic Showdown

The Flying Fijians live up to their name, and according to Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger, they are ready to take flight in their upcoming match. Schwalger expressed his excitement during the team’s final training session at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, stating, “We are really excited to be here.” The former Samoan captain, who led his team during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, emphasized the fresh start that comes with a new year and competition, eagerly anticipating a competitive game.

Having been part of the Super Rugby champion Chiefs from 2012 to 2013, Schwalger is anticipating a tough encounter against the Flying Fijians in their Pacific Nations Cup opener. He noted that the unpredictability of the Fijian players adds to the challenge ahead.

This match holds special significance for the Samoan team, as it coincides with the Samoa Rugby Union’s centennial celebration. Rugby was introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920, and the Apia Rugby Union was established in 1924. Notably, on August 18, 1924, Western Samoa faced Fiji for the first time in an international match in Apia, where Fiji emerged victorious with a score of 6-0.

Schwalger acknowledged the magnitude of the task before them, noting the immense support from their nation. “It is a big year for us. We play Fiji every year and the boys know what is expected. Our whole nation is watching and they are supporting us throughout the campaign,” he stated.

Furthermore, he mentioned that the team has been in training for the past three weeks leading up to the match, highlighting the unique challenge for new players, some of whom will be playing in Fiji for the first time. “It will be an awesome game,” he said confidently.

The highly anticipated match is set to kick off at 6 PM.
