Samoa achieved a significant milestone in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship by securing their second straight victory with a 2-0 win over Tonga in Suva. This triumph solidifies their lead in Group A and brings them closer to the semi-finals.
Samoa started the match with authority, showcasing impressive ball control and utilizing their wingers effectively to challenge Tonga’s defense. The first goal came from Taimane Devoux, who took advantage of a misplay by the Tongan goalkeeper following a well-executed free-kick by Leah Atuaia.
This early success set the pace for the game, as Samoa pressed on for additional goals. In the second half, they maintained their offensive pressure, with captain Lynn Aiono Sagiao and Jayde Sagapolutele playing pivotal roles. Sagiao ultimately scored with a powerful shot just outside the penalty area, extending their lead.
Tonga, missing key player Tyra Bagiante due to injury, found it difficult to launch effective counterattacks and spent much of the match defending. Although they had a few promising opportunities, they could not convert those chances into goals.
With this victory, Samoa secures their spot in the semi-finals, while Tonga is now in a precarious position and must win their upcoming match against the Cook Islands to keep their hopes of advancing alive.
