Samoa has achieved a significant milestone in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship by securing their second consecutive win, defeating Tonga 2-0 in Suva. This victory reinforces their leading position in Group A and brings them closer to the semi-finals.
The match kicked off with Samoa quickly establishing their dominance, showcasing smooth ball movement and effectively utilizing their wingers to break through Tonga’s defense. The first goal came from Taimane Devoux, who took advantage of a miscalculated catch by the Tongan goalkeeper after Leah Atuaia delivered a precise free-kick.
This early goal set the momentum for the remainder of the match, as Samoa continued to seek additional scoring opportunities. In the second half, they maintained their offensive pressure, with Captain Lynn Aiono Sagiao and Jayde Sagapolutele playing pivotal roles. Sagiao increased their lead with a powerful shot from near the penalty spot.
Tonga faced challenges without key player Tyra Bagiante, who was sidelined due to injury. This hindered their ability to launch effective counterattacks, forcing them to concentrate on defense. Although they had a few promising chances, they failed to convert any into goals.
With this triumph, Samoa has secured their spot in the semi-finals, while Tonga must win their upcoming match against the Cook Islands to keep their hopes of advancing alive.
