Samoa triumphed over host nation Fiji with a narrow 1-0 victory in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship, successfully securing the top spot in Group A and advancing to the semi-finals. This outcome also allowed Tonga to progress as runners-up, eliminating Fiji from the tournament.

Fiji required at least a draw to continue in the competition, but their hopes were dashed. The match began competitively, with both teams showcasing significant physical play, despite modifications to their line-ups.

An early substitution for Fiji saw Asenaca Naio leave the field due to an injury, replaced by Suliana Vuniyayawa, but neither team could score in the first half.

Samoa made a strategic change at halftime by bringing in Holly Leapai, whose impact was immediately felt. In the 51st minute, Ayres Ava netted the decisive goal, redirecting a high ball past Fiji’s goalkeeper Aliana Vakalomoa.

Fiji fought hard for an equalizer, with goalkeeper Vakalomoa performing crucial saves and midfielder Sisilia Kuladina attempting long-range shots. However, Samoa’s defensive unit remained resilient.

In the end, Fiji’s efforts were in vain, and Samoa’s structured play allowed them to secure the victory. As a result, Samoa advances to the semi-finals while Fiji faces an early exit from the tournament.
