Samoa Shocks Fiji to Secure Semi-Final Spot!

Samoa secured a place in the semi-finals of the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship by defeating hosts Fiji, thereby finishing at the top of Group A. This outcome also allowed Tonga to advance in second place.

Fiji entered the match aware that a win or a draw would enable them to claim second place in Group A after Tonga’s earlier victory over the Cook Islands.

With the semi-finals already within reach, Samoa’s coach Juan Chang opted to rest players such as Holly Leapai and Cali Willis, introducing Brielle Tautua and Jayde Sagapolutele into the starting lineup. Fiji’s coach Marika Rodu made changes as well, starting Shania Singh and Ulamila Rasovasova.

The match began as a competitive affair, with Fiji’s physical style being met by Samoa’s resilience. Fiji had to substitute Asenaca Naio early in the match due to an injury, bringing on Suliana Vuniyayawa. Although there were few clear chances, Leah Atuaia nearly scored from a corner that threatened to go in directly.

In the second half, Samoa brought Leapai onto the field, injecting new strength into their attack. She had an immediate impact, taking an early shot. The breakthrough came in the 51st minute when Ayres Ava redirected a high ball into the net, putting Samoa ahead.

Faced with the necessity to equalize, Fiji intensified their efforts on both ends of the field. Goalkeeper Ariana Valakoloma made an impressive save against a threatening cross into the box from Leapai. Later, Sisilia Kuladina attempted a long-range shot, aiming for a goal similar to her previous matches, but Margaret Fagasuisui Tuii successfully denied her.

Despite their efforts and determination, Fiji was unable to secure the crucial goal against a solid and organized Samoa team.
