Samoa has achieved a remarkable milestone in the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship by securing their second consecutive victory, winning 2-0 against Tonga in Suva. This victory solidifies their position at the top of Group A and brings them closer to the semi-finals.
The match commenced with Samoa demonstrating their strength right from the start, showcasing impressive ball movement and effectively utilizing their wingers to break through Tonga’s defense. The first goal for Samoa was scored by Taimane Devoux, who took advantage of a mishandled catch by the Tongan goalkeeper after Leah Atuaia delivered a well-placed free-kick.
This early goal set a positive tone for Samoa, who continued to press for additional goals. In the second half, they maintained their offensive pressure, with captain Lynn Aiono Sagiao and Jayde Sagapolutele playing key roles. Sagiao managed to score with a powerful shot from close range, extending their lead.
Tonga struggled to respond due to the absence of their key player Tyra Bagiante, who was sidelined by injury, leaving them with difficulties in launching effective counterattacks. Although they had a few promising opportunities, they were unable to convert these chances into goals.
With this win, Samoa has secured their spot in the semi-finals, while Tonga finds itself in a must-win situation against the Cook Islands if they hope to advance.
