Samoa Set to Soar: A Historic Clash in the Pacific Nations Cup

The Flying Fijians live up to their name, ready to showcase their skills on the field. This sentiment was echoed by Mahonri Schwalger, the head coach of Manu Samoa, during their practice session at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.

“We are really excited to be here,” stated Schwalger, a former captain of the Samoan team during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, when speaking to SUNsports. He emphasized the significance of the match, noting, “It is a new year and new competition and we are looking forward to a good game.”

As a key member of the Chiefs squad that won Super Rugby from 2012 to 2013, Schwalger is familiar with the competitive spirit needed for success. He expressed anticipation for a physical match against the Flying Fijians as his team aims for victory in their Pacific Nations Cup opener. Schwalger highlighted the unpredictability of the Fijian players as a challenge his team must prepare for.

This match holds special importance for Samoa, coinciding with the Samoa Rugby Union’s centennial celebration. Rugby was introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920, and the Apia Rugby Union was established in 1924. In that same year, on August 18, Western Samoa played its inaugural international match against Fiji, which ended in a 6–0 victory for Fiji.

Schwalger acknowledged the challenges ahead on foreign soil but expressed confidence in his team’s preparation over the past three weeks leading up to the PNC opener. “It is a big year for us. We play Fiji every year and the boys know what is expected. Our whole nation is watching and they are supporting us throughout the campaign,” he remarked.

He also recognized the experience factor, with several new players facing their first match in Fiji, adding, “It will be an awesome game.” The match is set to kick off at 6 PM.
