Samoa’s Prime Minister, La’auLiaLeumalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt, has taken a firm stance regarding the allocation of funding from the Australian Government aimed at supporting rugby development in Samoa. He has expressed that he will refrain from signing over these funds until significant governance issues surrounding Lakapi Samoa, the governing body of rugby in the country, are addressed.

In a recent announcement, the Prime Minister publicly urged the management of Lakapi Samoa to resign, implying that their departure is essential for any potential approval of the funding aimed at bolstering the sport. Schmidt has criticized the current management and coaching structure, attributing poor performance from national teams to their governance.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, he mentioned that if the Lakapi Samoa management fails to step down, the government, along with former rugby players and dedicated supporters, is prepared to establish a new rugby union. Schmidt noted that smaller rugby unions across the country have already voiced their concerns regarding the operations and management of Lakapi Samoa.

During discussions with representatives from Rugby Australia and World Rugby, the Prime Minister raised important questions about the stalled funding. He sought clarity on how the funds would be utilized given the existing governance challenges within the rugby union. Despite having reached out formally to Lakapi Samoa two months ago, the lack of response has suggested to him a reluctance to change leadership.

The discussions with international rugby bodies were centered around the Veimoana Partnership, which amounts to $150 million (US$105 million) allocated for rugby development in Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji over the next five years. Out of this, Samoa stands to receive $50 million (US$35 million) aimed at enhancing rugby and promoting economic development across the Pacific islands. The Australian Government has urged the Prime Minister to engage with his counterparts in Fiji and Tonga to facilitate dialogue regarding this crucial funding.

The situation presents a significant moment for Samoan rugby, as resolving governance issues could open doors for much-needed support, enhancing the sport and contributing to the broader development of the nation. With the right changes in place, Samoa could leverage this funding for substantial growth and success in rugby, reinforcing its legacy in the sport.
