Samoa Prepares for Thrilling Clash with Flying Fijians in Epic Rugby Showdown

The Flying Fijians are expected to showcase their skills in the Pacific Nations Cup opener, as noted by Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger during a practice session at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

“We are really excited to be here,” Schwalger, a former Samoan captain who led the team at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, expressed in an interview. He acknowledged the significance of the event, marking a new year and competition for the team.

Having been part of the Super Rugby championship-winning Chiefs from 2012 to 2013, Schwalger is bracing for a physically demanding match against the Flying Fijians, highlighting the unpredictability of their play as a key challenge.

This match holds additional weight for the Samoan side, coinciding with the Samoa Rugby Union’s 100-year celebration. Rugby was introduced to Samoa in 1920 by the Marist Brothers, and the Apia Rugby Union was established in 1924. Notably, the first international match for Western Samoa took place against Fiji in Apia on August 18, 1924, with Fiji winning 6-0.

Schwalger emphasized the importance of this game, stating that his team is fully aware of the expectations from their fans back home. “It is a big year for us. We play Fiji every year and the boys know what is expected. Our whole nation is watching and supporting us throughout the campaign,” he said.

The team has dedicated the last three weeks to preparation ahead of the match. Schwalger mentioned that for some players, it will be their first experience playing in Fiji, making it a special occasion.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m.
