The Government of Samoa has countered accusations that its recent actions toward the Samoa Observer constitute an infringement on media freedom. It asserts that the decision was prompted by ongoing “unprofessional and unethical conduct” exhibited by the newspaper.
In a statement released on Saturday, officials acknowledged concerns raised by both the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) and the Pacific Freedom Forum (PFF). Nonetheless, the government emphasized its dedication to maintaining media freedom, transparency, and constructive engagement with the press.
“This is not a ban on media freedom – it is a response to persistent unprofessional and unethical conduct,” the statement explained. It specified that the actions taken were directed solely at the Samoa Observer due to prolonged misconduct, violations of industry ethics, and continuous instances of inaccurate and misleading reporting.
The government highlighted that numerous opportunities had been provided to the Samoa Observer for correction, but these attempts were unsuccessful. “Despite multiple opportunities for correction, dialogue, and improvement, the pattern of irresponsible reporting persisted, culminating in actions that undermined the integrity of public information and the trust required between Government and media outlets,” the statement noted.
Importantly, the government clarified that no other media organizations in Samoa are affected, and engagement with all other local and international media outlets will proceed normally. Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt has instructed that the situation undergo a “fair and transparent review process.”
“The Prime Minister has already indicated that the matter will be addressed in due course, with the objective of resolving issues and implementing appropriate corrective actions,” the statement continued. It emphasized that the review will be guided by fairness and transparency and will afford the media organization a chance to present its case.
The Government reiterated its support for media freedom while maintaining the expectation for accuracy and adherence to ethical standards. “Media freedom comes with the equally important responsibility of accuracy, fairness, and respect for ethical journalism,” the statement remarked. It affirmed that while Samoa values fair reporting, it cannot condone repeated transgressions against fundamental media ethics.
Furthermore, the government appealed to regional organizations to gather comprehensive information before reaching conclusions. “The Government invites PINA and PFF to engage constructively and to review the documented evidence of unprofessional reporting and breach of media ethical standards that led to this action,” it stated.
Ultimately, the Government of Samoa reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, accountability, and a free press, clarifying that its actions are “specific, justified, and based on conduct, not an attempt to suppress the free flow of information or journalism.” It concluded by expressing openness to fair, balanced, and ethical engagement with all media organizations, both locally and internationally. This situation illustrates the government’s endeavor to foster accountability within the media while affirming its commitment to upholding democracy and public trust.
