Samoa Eyes Victory in Thrilling Pacific Nations Cup Opener Against Flying Fijians

The Flying Fijians are poised to take flight in the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup, as stated by Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger during a training session at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday. Schwalger, who captained Samoa during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, expressed his team’s excitement for the match, noting that they are looking forward to a competitive game in this new tournament year.

Looking ahead to their opener against Fiji, Schwalger anticipated a physical match, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the Fijian players. He highlighted the significance of this game as it aligns with the Samoa Rugby Union’s 100-year anniversary celebration. Rugby was introduced to Samoa by the Marist Brothers in 1920, and the Apia Rugby union was established in 1924. Samoa’s first international match was against Fiji on August 18, 1924, which Fiji won 6-0.

Schwalger emphasized the weight of expectations on the team, stating that the Samoa supporters are eager for success. He also mentioned that the squad has been diligently preparing over the past three weeks for this pivotal matchup.

“This year is significant for us as we face Fiji annually, and the players are aware of what is at stake. Our entire nation is rallying behind us,” he remarked.

The match is set to kick off at 6 PM.
