Samoa’s cabinet has taken a significant step toward addressing wage issues by approving consultations regarding a proposed national minimum wage of WST6 per hour. This announcement, made by Prime Minister La’auli Leuatea Schmidt, also included a pay rise for all civil servants, fulfilling a commitment made by the Fa’atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi Party during the previous year’s election campaign.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement in this process, sharing that the cabinet’s decision allows for consultations and a review that would involve input from the private sector. “There are areas in which the government is looking at, like the private sector and the consequences of having another increase on minimum wage,” La’auli stated, highlighting the government’s desire to consider diverse perspectives on this critical issue.

Currently, Samoa’s minimum wage stands at WST4 an hour (approximately USD1.49), which was increased from WST3 in July 2025. The proposed increase to WST6 reflects the government’s aim to improve the living standards of workers across both the public and private sectors.

This initiative brings with it a sense of hope for many Samoans, as it could help alleviate financial pressures faced by workers. As consultations proceed, the outcome will depend significantly on the feedback gathered from various sectors within the economy. The government’s commitment to reassessing wage levels indicates a positive effort towards fostering an environment of fair compensation and support for the workforce in Samoa.
