The Flying Fijians are known for their speed and skill, and Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger highlighted this during the team’s captain’s run at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday. “We are really excited to be here,” said Schwalger, a former captain of Samoa’s 2011 Rugby World Cup team.
Looking forward to their Pacific Nations Cup opener, Schwalger acknowledged the challenge ahead as they anticipate a physical match against the Flying Fijians. He noted the unpredictability of Fiji’s play as a major consideration for his team.
This match holds special significance for Samoa, coinciding with the 100-year celebration of the Samoa Rugby Union. Rugby was introduced to Samoa in 1920 by the Marist Brothers, and in 1924, the Apia Rugby Union was established. That same year, on August 18, Samoa faced Fiji in their first international match, losing 6-0.
Schwalger expressed confidence as his team prepares to compete on Fiji soil, with the entire nation backing them. “It is a big year for us. We play Fiji every year, and the boys know what is expected,” he stated. He also mentioned that the team has trained intensively over the last three weeks in anticipation of the match.
With some players experiencing their first trip to Fiji, Schwalger is confident that it will be an exciting game. The match is set to kick off at 6 PM.
