Samoa Aims for Glory in 100-Year Rugby Rivalry with Fiji

The team known as the Flying Fijians has generated excitement ahead of their upcoming match, as noted by Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger during their training session at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Schwalger expressed enthusiasm, saying, “We are really excited to be here.” The former Samoan captain, who led his team in the 2011 Rugby World Cup, emphasized that this is a new year and a new competition, and they are eager for a strong performance in their Pacific Nations Cup opener.

Having been part of the Super Rugby winning Chiefs team from 2012 to 2013, Schwalger anticipates a physical challenge from the Flying Fijians, recognizing the unpredictability of their playing style. He highlighted the significance of the match, as it coincides with the Samoa Rugby Union’s 100-year celebration.

Rugby arrived in Samoa through the efforts of the Marist Brothers in 1920, leading to the formation of the Apia Rugby Union in 1924. Samoa’s first international match took place against Fiji on August 18, 1924, where Fiji secured a 6-0 victory.

Schwalger acknowledged the challenge ahead and the importance of performing well on Fiji’s home soil. “It is a big year for us. We play Fiji every year and the boys know what is expected. Our whole nation is watching and supporting us throughout the campaign,” he remarked.

The team has been in preparation for the last three weeks leading up to the match, and Schwalger noted that it poses a unique challenge for new players, some of whom will be experiencing Fiji for the first time. “It will be an awesome game,” he added, confirming that the kick-off is scheduled for 6 PM.
