The RFNS Puamau has been successfully extracted from the reef at Fulaga. The salvage tugboat Ratu Rabici, supported by the RFNS Savenaca, completed the operation. This successful extraction comes three weeks post the grounding incident, with two weeks dedicated to salvage operations, aiming to limit environmental harm and prevent further damage.
The Republic of Fiji Naval Division affirmed this development, noting that after adhering to traditional protocol in Fulaga and obtaining approval from the Vanua of Ogea, the RFNS Puamau was towed to the secure waters of Ogea Island. Here, a thorough damage assessment will be performed preceding the next phase.
The Fiji Navy commended the relentless efforts of the salvage teams, which included local and international contracted subject-matter experts, the RFNS Savenaca ship crew, as well as Navy divers and engineers. They recognized their work under demanding circumstances and were grateful for the unending support of partners and stakeholders, all contributing to a safe recovery operation.
The RFN also extended its heartfelt gratitude to the Vanua for their continued support and well wishes. Meanwhile, the Board of Inquiry keeps on with their investigation into the grounding incident, aiming to establish the facts of the incident and generate recommendations based on their findings.
