Sale Sharks, a prominent team in the Gallagher Premiership, is showing interest in bringing aboard Ponipate Loganimasi, the talented wing and fullback for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua and the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, for the 2026-2027 season. Loganimasi has been enjoying a remarkable 15-a-side rugby journey since clinching a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Remarkably, Loganimasi transitioned directly from the national sevens team to the Flying Fijians without any prior domestic 15s experience, a feat matched only by recent recruit Joji Nasova. He made an impressive debut during the Pacific Nations Cup, where he scored two thrilling tries off the bench, contributing significantly to Fiji’s 47-17 triumph over Japan.

Loganimasi’s fifteens career took off in the last season, where he scored six tries in just 12 matches for the Fijian Drua, gaining recognition as a standout player ahead of the 2026 season. His strong performance at fullback during the Flying Fijians’ 33-27 victory against Canada has presented head coach Mick Byrne with an enticing option for the position.

Should Loganimasi join Sale Sharks, it could create challenges for the Flying Fijians, as their options for fullbacks are limited. Currently, Salesi Rayasi stands as the principal specialist fullback, with the position also being shared among Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula, Vuate Karawalevu, Setareki Tuicuvu, and Ilaisa Droasese. Loganimasi has emerged as a viable backup to Rayasi.

Historically, many Fijian players transitioning to overseas clubs often find themselves utilized primarily as wings or utility backs, and Loganimasi’s potential move might follow this trend. Alongside Loganimasi, Sale Sharks is looking to bolster their roster further, with head coach Alex Sanderson confirming the arrivals of former England center Joe Merchant from Stade Français and Welsh loosehead Nicky Smith from Leicester Tigers.

The addition of such talents could enhance the competitive spirit of the Gallagher Premiership while showcasing the growing influence of Fijian rugby players in international leagues.
