Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has publicly criticized UEFA for a recent tribute to Palestinian footballer Suleiman al-Obeid. Salah’s frustration stems from UEFA’s failure to acknowledge the circumstances of Obeid’s death, which occurred during an Israeli military attack while he was waiting for humanitarian aid in Gaza. The Palestinian Football Association reported that Obeid, a significant figure in Palestinian football and regarded as the “Pele of Palestinian football,” lost his life at 41, having scored over 100 goals throughout his career, including two in 24 matches for the national team.
In response to UEFA’s tribute post on social media, which described Obeid as a talent who inspired many children even in bleak times, Salah asked pointed questions regarding how Obeid died, where it occurred, and the reasons behind it.
The context of Obeid’s death highlights the ongoing violence in Gaza following Israel’s military operations launched after the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023. Since then, reports indicate that over 61,300 Palestinians have died due to the conflict, including numerous civilians affected by airstrikes and military actions. In a troubling pattern, at least 38 individuals were reported killed and 491 injured in the latest round of Israeli military activity.
Salah, a well-known advocate for humanitarian aid in Gaza, has previously called for world leaders to unite and prevent further bloodshed. This situation underscores not only the personal loss experienced in the sports world but also reflects the broader humanitarian crisis that continues to persist in the region, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict.
The ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by the people of Gaza remains dire. Amidst this turmoil, advocates inspire hope that increased awareness and international diplomatic efforts can lead to improved conditions for all civilians in the area.
