Residents of Sakoca, Nasinu, are expressing their frustration over the persistent water supply issues they’ve been facing for almost a year. Many locals report that they only receive water for a few days each week—typically 24 hours of supply, with the taps running dry on other days. This ongoing disruption has raised concerns about when they can expect a reliable water service.

One resident highlighted the inconsistency in the availability of water carting trucks, which has added to the community’s woes. The situation has prompted numerous complaints and questions directed towards the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF).

In response, Kelera Rabuli, head of the customer hub at WAF, acknowledged the troubles faced by residents in Sakoca. She explained that the current disruptions are largely due to high turbidity levels caused by adverse weather conditions, specifically the ongoing cyclone season, and are not a continuation of prior issues from December. Rabuli stated that the primary goal at the moment is to improve reservoir levels so that water supply can be restored to affected customers as soon as possible.

WAF has urged residents to store water whenever it is available and to make use of water tanker services that are standing by to assist, especially in areas like Sakoca.

This situation echoes the requests made by residents in other regions such as Tamavua and Namadi, who have also been grappling with similar water supply challenges despite frequent heavy rainfall. Local residents have often been met with explanations from WAF regarding low water levels or contamination, leading to ongoing dissatisfaction within the community.

However, there is a hopeful outlook. Infrastructure projects are currently in progress aimed at enhancing water supply reliability throughout the area and accommodating future demand from the growing population. These developments not only serve to alleviate immediate challenges but also provide a clear pathway toward sustainable solutions for water security.

Investing in water infrastructure represents a crucial step towards improving the lives of residents who depend on these essential services, fostering resilience and stability within the community for the future.
