Saints Snag Rising Fijian Star: What’s Next for Amena Caqusau?

Northampton Saints have officially confirmed the signing of Amena Caqusau, a promising 20-year-old Fijian wing, who will be joining the club this summer from the Glasgow Warriors. Born in Salisbury, Caqusau spent seven years studying at Queen Victoria School in Dunblane, where he honed his rugby skills before transitioning to the senior men’s game.

His recent season with Glasgow Hutchesons Aloysians showcased his capability, leading to a professional contract with Glasgow Warriors. In addition to his club experience, Caqusau has represented Scotland at the under-18 and under-20 levels, notably contributing in three matches during last year’s Under-20 Six Nations Championship.

Weighing in at 96kg, the dynamic wing is looking forward to the challenges of the Gallagher Premiership, particularly with the opportunity to grow under the Saints’ coaching staff. Caqusau expressed his enthusiasm for the move, stating, “I’ve been watching the Premiership my whole life… Saints play a brilliant brand of rugby… It’s clear to see how much the Club means to the supporters.”

The Saints’ Director of Rugby, Phil Dowson, recognized Caqusau’s athleticism, describing him as a player capable of making impactful plays both in attack and defense. “He has that very Fijian ability to beat players, to be powerful in contact, and to get offloads away,” Dowson noted, highlighting the unique skills that Caqusau is expected to bring to the Saints’ back-three.

This signing is seen as a strategic addition to the Saints’ squad, aligning with their aim to cultivate young talent and strengthen their performance in upcoming seasons. As Caqusau embarks on his journey with the Saints, fans can be optimistic about the exciting potential he brings to the team.

With an influx of Fijian talent in rugby currently, such as Mitieli Vulikijapani’s debut for the Saints and others moving across leagues, the growing presence of Fijian players in European rugby is setting the stage for a vibrant competitive landscape. This trend reflects not only individual growth but also the enriching impact these athletes can have on their teams and the sport as a whole.
