Saint Mary’s Primary School successfully defended its title at the Fiji Primary Schools Labasa Athletics Zone competition, held at Subrail Park yesterday. The school achieved an impressive haul, securing 30 gold medals, 17 silver medals, and 8 bronze medals, totaling 55 medals overall.
Head teacher Sunil Dutt expressed his gratitude to the 88 athletes for their commitment and hard work, which greatly contributed to the school’s success. He also acknowledged the support of teachers, coaches, and parents, who played a crucial role in motivating the students during this competitive event. “It was a tough competition among the 17 schools that participated,” Dutt remarked, highlighting the challenging atmosphere of the event.
Notably, Saint Mary’s recorded a greater medal count compared to the previous year, showcasing their progress and determination. Penaia Tunayau, the meet manager for the Fiji Primary Schools Labasa Athletics Zone competition, praised the organization of the event and commended the teachers for ensuring athlete safety, particularly given the heavy rain during the competition. “Even though there was heavy rain, the athletes proved that nothing could stop them from displaying their skills and talents,” Tunayau stated.
The victorious athletes are now gearing up to participate in the upcoming national meet, scheduled for the end of this month in Suva, where they will have the opportunity to showcase their skills on a larger stage.
