Saint Mary’s Primary School has successfully defended its title at the Fiji Primary Schools Labasa Athletics Zone competition held at Subrail Park yesterday. The school excelled in the event, securing a total of 55 medals—comprising 30 gold, 17 silver, and eight bronze.
Head teacher Sunil Dutt expressed his gratitude towards the 88 athletes for their commitment and hard work that brought pride to the school. “I would like to thank the teachers, coaches, and parents for their unwavering support, as well as the students for representing the school excellently,” said Dutt. He noted the intense competition with 17 schools participating, and remarked that the school had achieved an improved medal tally compared to the previous year.
Penaia Tunayau, the meet manager of the Fiji Primary Schools Labasa Athletics Zone competition, acknowledged the efforts of the organizing committee and teachers for ensuring the safety of participants, noting that there were no major injuries despite challenging weather conditions. “Even in the face of heavy rain, the athletes demonstrated that their skills and talents cannot be hindered,” Tunayau said.
Looking ahead, the winning athletes are now gearing up for the national competition scheduled for the end of this month in Suva.
This victory not only demonstrates the resilience and talent of the young athletes but also highlights the strong community involvement from teachers, parents, and coaches that support their development. The upcoming national meet offers an exciting opportunity for these athletes to showcase their talents on a larger stage, fostering hope for their bright futures in athletics.
