Saint Mary’s Primary School successfully defended its title at the Fiji Primary Schools Labasa Athletics Zone competition held at Subrail Park yesterday. The school impressed with a remarkable performance, securing a total of 55 medals, including 30 gold, 17 silver, and 8 bronze.
Head teacher Sunil Dutt expressed his gratitude towards the 88 athletes for their commitment and hard work in bringing pride to the school. He also acknowledged the vital support from teachers, coaches, and parents who played an essential role in this achievement. “It was a tough competition among the 17 schools that participated,” said Dutt, highlighting the competitive nature of the event.
In comparison to last year’s performance, the school saw a significant increase in their medal haul. Penaia Tunayau, the meet manager, commended the efforts of the organizing committee and the teachers for ensuring a safe environment, with no major injuries reported during the event. He noted that despite the heavy rainfall, the athletes showcased resilience and determination to excel.
Looking ahead, the winners are now gearing up for the national competition set to take place later this month in Suva.
This triumph not only reflects the dedication of the students and the support of their community but also sets a positive tone for the upcoming national meet. It embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and perseverance, reminding us that challenges can be overcome with hard work and teamwork.
