Saint Mary’s Primary School has successfully defended its title at the Fiji Primary Schools Labasa Athletics Zone competition held at Subrail Park. The school demonstrated an impressive performance by securing a total of 30 gold medals, 17 silver medals, and eight bronze medals, culminating in 55 medals overall.
Head teacher Sunil Dutt expressed his gratitude to the 88 athletes for their commitment and hard work, which has brought pride to the school. He also acknowledged the vital support from teachers, coaches, and parents, who played a crucial role in encouraging the students. Dutt noted that the competition was fierce among the 17 participating schools.
Notably, this year’s medal haul surpassed last year’s achievements, showcasing the athletes’ growth and determination. Meet manager Penaia Tunayau recognized the efforts of the organizing committee and teachers in ensuring athlete safety throughout the event. Despite facing heavy rain, the athletes demonstrated resilience and dedication, proving that challenging conditions could not hinder their performance.
Looking ahead, the victorious athletes will prepare for the upcoming national meet scheduled for the end of the month in Suva, where they will have the opportunity to shine on a larger stage.
This event not only highlights the importance of sports in fostering teamwork and discipline among students but also serves as an inspiration for young athletes to pursue excellence, regardless of the challenges they may encounter.
