Saint Mary’s Primary School successfully defended its title at the Fiji Primary Schools Labasa Athletics Zone competition held at Subrail Park. The school showcased an impressive performance, securing a total of 55 medals—comprising 30 gold, 17 silver, and 8 bronze awards.
Head teacher Sunil Dutt expressed his gratitude towards the 88 athletes for their hard work and commitment, which not only brought pride to the school but also highlighted their talents. He extended his thanks to the teachers, coaches, and parents for their unwavering support during the competition, which saw participation from 17 schools.
Dutt noted that this year, they achieved a greater medal count compared to the previous year, emphasizing the continual growth of their athletes. Competition meet manager Penaia Tunayau praised the organizing committee and teachers for ensuring a safe event, despite challenging weather conditions with heavy rain. Tunayau acknowledged that the athletes’ determination allowed them to shine, demonstrating that adverse conditions could not dampen their spirit.
Looking ahead, the winners are now gearing up for the national meet scheduled at the end of this month in Suva, a significant opportunity for the young athletes to further showcase their abilities on a larger stage.
This achievement reflects not only the dedication of the students but also the collaborative effort within the school community, fostering a sense of pride and encouraging sportsmanship among the youth.
